Groupware Server 6.0 > Troubleshooting

KB1093: Error message: We do not relay/Relay not allowed/Relay denied

Summary:
When sending e-mail you may receive an error message similar to the one of the following messages:

We do not relay
Relay not allowed
Relay not permitted
Unable to relay
Relay not authorized

Each of these messages may also have an error code (550) and sometimes an extended error code (550 5.7.1).

Resolution:
The resolution to this issue depends on how the message was received. The message could be received in both a return (bounce) message or in the e-mail client.

If you are receiving this error in an e-mail client as a send error..
The first thing you should check is if the e-mail address is set correctly. The e-mail address should be the user's username@domain.com. For example, if the account name is 'bob' and the default domain is 'company.com', then the e-mail address should be bob@company.com. If you have aliases or domain aliases set up, the e-mail address can be a fully qualified alias or a valid username@ADomainAlias.com.

If you are certain the e-mail address is set up correctly in the e-mail client, the next step is to check to make sure that the relay options are correct. To access the Relay options, do the following:

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the Groupware Server 6.0 Administration Interface and log in as an Administrator.
  2. Click the + sign next to the Mail Services tree to the left of the window to expand the e-mail options.
  3. Click the + sign next to the SMTP branch under the E-mail tree to expand the SMTP options.
  4. Click the Relay item under the SMTP branch.

By default, the option Allow SMTP relay for Groupware Server users only is the only option checked. This simply requires that the e-mail address be a valid e-mail address as described above. If you have another item checked, such as the Require SMTP authentication option, insure that your e-mail account is correctly configured to send authentication information when logging in to send the message. For testing purposes, disable all but the Allow SMTP relay for Groupware Server users only option temporarily and try sending the message again. If it works, then the issue is with your mail client's configuration.

If you are receiving this error as a returned (bounced) message..
If you receive the error in a returned message, it typically indicates an error with the ISP's SMTP server (or upstream server that you are relaying the mail through). It is possible you are attempting to send a message with an e-mail address or domain name that is not authorized to relay though the server. The returned message will contain a lot of information to help you diagnose what is actually happening, including the name or IP of the server that is rejecting the message.

The first thing you should check is if you are relaying mail through your ISP's SMTP server. You can check this option by doing the following:

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the Groupware Server 6.0 Administration Interface and log in as an Administrator.
  2. Click the + sign next to the E-mail tree to the left of the window to expand the e-mail options.
  3. Click the SMTP item under the E-mail tree.
  4. Under the SMTP Delivery Settings area, check to see if the Relay to ISP SMTP Server radio button is selected. If it is, the name of the SMTP server you are using as a relay will be listed in the field just below the option.

If this option is selected, then it means you are relaying through the specified SMTP server. If this server matches the server that is rejecting the mail, it indicates that you are not authorized to send mail through the server using the e-mail address/domain specified. As such you will need to contact the administrator of the server listed for assistance.

If the option to send mail Directly via MX records is set, then this is likely an issue with the destination server and will need to be addressed by contacting the owner of that server for assistance.
