KB1046: Use Remote Desktop (RDP) to connect to a LAN computer from a remote location in 602LAN SUITE 2004.
The Mapped Links feature in 602LAN SUITE provides the ability to connect machines on the local network through the proxy server. Mapped Links can also be used to provide support for applications that do not support a proxy server.
Allow RDP access to a LAN computer from the Internet Remote Desktop is a feature in Windows that allows you to remotely connect to a user's desktop. To configure 602LAN SUITE to allow RDP access to a computer residing behind 602LAN SUITE on your LAN, you will need to do the following:
Open 602LAN SUITE, click Settings and then click Advanced Configuration.
Click the Proxy tab, then click the Mapped Links tab.
Fill out the form as follows: Protocol: TCP Connection from Client: IP address: 0.0.0.0 IP Mask: 0.0.0.0 To this computer: IP address: (Choose your WAN/Internet interface) Port: 3389 Map to: Host Address: IP address of the target computer (e.g. 192.168.1.10) Port: 3389
Click Add to add the rule, then Save to save your settings.
To connect to the remote computer, you would use 602LAN SUITE's Public IP address or domain name and your request will be forwarded to the appropriate computer you have set up in the Map To: field above.
Firewall issues with inbound connections As with any inbound connection, you may need to configure your firewall to allow access via this port. If you are connecting TO a remote server or a server in your LAN, you do NOT need to configure the firewall. If you are using a third party firewall or a hardware router, you will need to consult your user manual for assistance with opening ports through your third party software or device.
In 602LAN SUITE, you would need to do the following to set up a firewall rule:
From the 602LAN SUITE console, click Settings, then Advanced Configuration.
Click the Firewall tab, then Add Rule.
For Protocol, click TCP and then enter 3389 and 3389 in the Port Range boxes.
For Direction, select incoming at [your network device] where "[your network device]" is the network device you are using for your *WAN*/Internet connection (NOT your LAN device).
For From:, select any source address.
For To:, click any destination address.
Click Ok, then Ok again, and then Save to save your settings.
This configuration will allow anyone from the Internet to connect through 602LAN SUITE to the computer defined in the Map to: Host Address: field. You can easily specify a single IP address to allow connections from by changing the Connection from Client: IP address: to the remote IP address and 255.255.255.255 for the IP Mask: field. To connect to the VNC server behind 602LAN SUITE, you would simply connect to the public IP address of the 602LAN SUITE server.
Issues with multiple RDP clients/multiple destinations Due to the nature of mapped links, it is impossible to specify more than one computer as a destination address. Fortunately, there is a way to change the listening port for RDP clients on your LAN to allow them to be remotely accessed using their own port number. Please visit this Microsoft Knowledge Base topic for information regarding how to set this up. You would need to create a mapped link and a firewall rule for each and every computer you wish to connect to, using the ports you specify in the registry.
An alternative to this would be to set up RDP on one computer (perhaps a server), then open a new RDP session to any computer on your LAN from the first RDP connection (eg: connect to a file server, then connect to a workstation FROM the file server).
Allow RDP access from the LAN to a remote computer on the Internet Probably the most common scenario would be the need to access a computer on a remote network. This, too requires a mapped link, as RDP does not support a proxy server. Follow these directions to map a link to a RDP server on the Internet:
Open 602LAN SUITE, click on Settings and then click Advanced Configuration.
Click the Proxy tab and then click the Mapped Links tab.
Fill out the form as follows: Protocol: TCP Connection from Client: IP address: 0.0.0.0 IP Mask: 0.0.0.0 To this computer: IP address: (Choose your LAN interface) Port: 3389 Map to: Host Address: Public IP address of remote computer Port: 3389
Click Add to add this rule, then Save to save your settings.
Now, to access this Remote Desktop server, you would simply need to enter the local IP address of your LAN SUITE server into your RDP client! If you are using 602LAN SUITE'S NAT proxy, the above steps to connect to a remote RDP server on the Internet are not needed at all! Simply enter the IP or host name into your client and connect!
NOTE: Mapped Links work with virtually any application or service that does not provide support for a proxy server. Please note that we can not assist you with setting up third party applications to work through 602LAN SUITE. If you have trouble setting up any third party application, you are welcome to ask a question in our Support Forums. If you would like to simply connect from a LAN computer behind 602LAN SUITE to a remote computer on the Internet, please visit this Knowledge Base topic.
