In the example below, I would like to average column A. I think I should use the 'Countif' to supply the divisor, as in =Sum(A1:A7)/Countif(K6:K12,">0"). It appears as though the Countif counts the "S's" and gives an answer of .16 instead of .98.
How do I get the average of column A?

I don't understand your formula (cell K ?).
If I want to know the average of A1-A7, I've the function "average(a1:a7)" and the result is 4.
For the average of your column B
the formula is "average(b1:b7)" and the result is 0.98 as your mentioned.
The average-function returns arithmetic mean of all numbers within the list.

I gotta love the simple answers. Thank you. I have gone from Excel, to Easy Office, through QuattroPro, and am now trying 602Tab, all within the last three weeks. With the other spreadsheets, if I use AVERAGE, they error on having text in the column.
