Cannot open Tab files w/Mail Merge?
Posted by  Gary Smith  on Tuesday, November 04, 2003 at 4:21:31 PM (EST)
I just purchased Suite 4.0 and installed it. I did have 602 Pro plus running with no problems.

Now when I open a text doc that is a mail merge I can set the options and select the records from the 602 tab spreadsheet, but when I try to print I get an error saying it can't open the tab file?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Gary
I don't have problems with printing of mail-merge files. I do it as follow:
.start mail merge wizard
.select main document
.select data source (your tab file)
.insert merge fields
.select appropriate records with the button "Organizer"
.print with the button "print" or save to file with the appropriate button.

Hope I could help you. Regards

Yes, that is my exact procedure and when I hit the print button it gives me an error that it can not open the data file?

Yet I can open the data file on it's own with tab.

As in 602pro Plus I am sure that the data file is not in use at the time. If it is it will not let you in.

Perhaps a stupid question: is your tab-file write-protected?

Gary
I can reproduce this "error". I think, this is a bug. I'll make a bug-report.

The tab file is not write protected. I keep all info updated on a daily basis in the tab file in question. Then monthly I do a mail merge and print the letters for mailing.

I also sent in a bug report. Now I'll have to uninstall and go back to 602 pro plus if I want to send my monthly billing!!!!

Yep, I just tried it too, and got the same problem..

BUT..

I can do it just fine if I save my tab file as a csv file then merge from the csv file :)

I just tried it by saving a spreadsheet as a dbf file (which is supported by Tab), and it worked as well. I imagine it's just something that affects .XLS and .WLS files.

Just spoke to the folks at Software602 and they confirmed what we are all saying.

It will not merge with .xls and to just save the file as a .dbf and it will work...

They are working on a fix ASAP.

Thanks to the guys at Software602

csv- and dbf-files have the disadvantage, that they cannot be edited in the wizard.
We are waiting for a fix.

I also ran into a few quirks with saving as .csv & .dbf

When I saved as .csv the files was corrupted....when saved as .dbf I had some errors appear in the first row which is my header row??

Also, when I printed the first test I had imbedded in my mail merge letter things like "date" and "column sum" neither of which worked...instead of inserting the date it just printed "{date}" and "{column sum}"....don't know why, but I'm gonna wait until the fix before I report that as as bug.

To give it the quick fix I had to type in the date and add up the columns manually. Just glad I only had 50 letters to print.
