mapping ports for p2p sharing
Posted by  Michael Westfield  on Thursday, July 24, 2003 at 10:08:55 PM (EST)
Has anyone figured out a foolproof setup for opening ports for file sharing? I cannot seem to get everything to work. I opened a port on the router alllowing the server to be the IP address of the machine running LAN SUITE. Possibly the erroneous info is in LAN SUITE setup (mapped links page) -- Can I use 0.0.0.0 for the destination server's address... ?

router is 192.168.1.1
all workstations have assigned IP addresses
LS is on 192.168.1.111
I want to allow two IP addresses (192.168.1.212 & 213) to have access to those ports (tcp 11000 & UDP 11001)

After looking thru the online manual and help pages for the latest version (LS2003), the firewall custom settings look like they might allow this peer to peer file sharing configuration easier than the mapped links settings... since there it offers the option to open a port range to any source and destination...(!)

(OK, It may be time to upgrade!)

Now I just have to figure our what to set me router to!? (NAT settings is the closest it has...) I guess I just open ports to the LS's IP address.

Why worry about configuring LANSuite with open ports or mapping? If you're using a Windows OS, particularly NT/Win2k,Win Pro, with NTFS - as long as your users are all on the same network - just install file sharing and configure the folders/files for sharing with the specific groups/users that need access to them.
