We are currently using the built in BitDefender AV engine in Groupware. Despite being updated regularly, it appears to be allowing in malware (infamous UPS non-delivery msg) in the form of zipped attachments which is easily caught by Mcafee and NOD32.
Is there any possibility of using another AV instead? I am growing tired of the Bitdefender's poor performance.

We use a bucket email from our host to collect all of our emails. We then use groupware to distribute the email to the correct user.
We also use the bitdefender in groupware, but we also use our webhost's anti virus and malware protection. This gives us double the protection.
If you don't want to use Bitdefender, using this setup will give you protection without it.
