Win98 crashes with 2004.0.05.413 release
Posted by  Jeffrey White  on Friday, April 22, 2005 at 6:39:46 PM (EST)
After installing the latest release (2004.0.05.413) of Lansuite, Windows 98A crashes in a matter of minutes. Lansuite launches properly and collects POP mail fine until them, at which point it gives a VMM error.

Clicking okay to close out of the error notification returns the desktop to a screen of yellow dots on a dark background with a flashing cursor approximately 2/3 down and 2/3 over l-r. Ctrl-Alt-Del is the only responsive keypress, and a reboot occurs.

This problem occurs whether or not Lansuite is loaded as a win service or is manually launched.

I re-installed the prior release and the system is stable. I downloaded the new release again and verified that the new and old copies are the same with a binary file compare. I have went back and forth between releases several times, all with the same results.

With this release, has Win98A support been abandoned or broken?

The manual states the following:

Operating System
Windows 98SE/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003

So it lists Win98SE as the minimun support.

From My Computer Properties, I am using Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222 A. System Information lists: Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A.

According to the system requirements, Windows 98 A is not supported. I don't believe it has ever been supported with LAN Suite 2003 or 2004.

Just because it has worked in the past doesn't mean it will work in the future. For example, I have a client that uses Linux. I have gotten Lan Suite to work on Linux using WineX (Windows emulator). Just because I managed to do that, doesn't mean if I call up with some weird error that support will help me. You are using an unsupported operating system. Upgrade your OS to a supported one and the problem will likely go away.

To clarify once again, I am running Windows 98 Second Edition. Lansuite 2004 build 2004.0.04.0813 runs fine; build 2004.0.05.0413 crashes the system. The error is as follows:

"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C00050CE in VXD VMM(01) + 000040CE. The current application will be terminated."

Pressing enter to terminate results in screen of yellow dots on a black background. Rebooting is the only way back to Windows.

I have done a completely new install (rather than upgrade) and the error still occurs.

Have you got all available patches for the operating system?

Are your drivers update-to-date as WIN98SE allows?
