I haven't used webmail up until now as the Thunderbird mail clients have worked fine. I tried to set it up but can't get it to work.
I enter: http://192.168.1.27/mail
return is:
Message
WWW disabled
I don't have the web server enabled but it does not appear that I have to for internal webmail. What am I doing wrong?

Wheather you use web mail on a internal LAN or external internet, you need the 'web server' turned on to use it.
