content management system (CMSimple)
Posted by  MichaelJ.H. Davies  on Thursday, February 24, 2005 at 10:43:25 AM (EST)
Does anyone have experience of using the freeware content management system CMSimple (available from together with LS2004?

CMSimple is a php-based content management system for the maintenance of small commercial or private sites, which I would like to use on a local Intranet WIN2KPro web server using LanSuite.

Using the Knowledge Base KB635 instructions, I have managed to get php installed and working without too much trouble but have not so far been able to get CMSimple working.

I am a complete novice at php so have not been able to fathom why CMSimple doesn't seem to work - or, for that matter, whether it is able to work with LS2004. Any helpful advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks.

I dropped it in my system and it is running just fine. But it will not run as file, you have to run it as a website.

So if you installed in c:\lansuite\docs\cmsimple
then run as:\cmsimple\index.php in your browser address box.

Thanks for your speedy reply, Russel- However, this is exactly what I have done / been trying to do - so it seems there must be something else wrong and I haven't so far been able to figure out what it is. IS there anything else that needs to be set up in Windows XP - anything that isn't mentioned in either the LS KB document on php or CMSimple's Installation Manual - both of which I have been through several times to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Just to add a little more explanation [and it seems now from a reply posted in CMSimple's user forum that cms actually is running so it is likely that the problem is over in that ball park rather than a problem with good old (reliable!) LanSuite (which I have been using for several years now and which I still think is a GREAT product at a GREAT price - and no, 602 has NOT paid me to state that, it is my honest opinion!)] - the problem is that I get a Warning message that says that some files cannot be found (stylesheet.css and template.htm in the cmsimple\templates\default folder - and YES, I have checked that these files are actually there - even made new copies from the original zipped installation file). When I posted the problem yesterday, I didn't know where this warning message was being generated but a cmsimple user tells me that it is cms.php that generates the message.

Located the problem. It is with PHP.
CMsimple works with PHP-4.3.10; it does not work with PHP-5.0.3. I do not know why, but it could be LanSuite does not like it. I tried to run PHPBB2 with PHP 5, and I get the same file not found messages. Will need research since at some point PHP-4 will be dropped, I am sure.

I suspect you are using PHP versions 5, I surjest you download PHP 4.3.10.

Found the Answer to using PHP 5.

In the 'Mapped Applications' you need to change the 'Path to EXE file' to

Notice the file name change from the Knowledge Base entry.

Although I am getting MySQL errors now in PHPBB2, but that is another problem.

Thanks again, Clem! Well - if only that was the answer but, unfortunately (and my apologies for not stating this in my original posting) I AM using php 4.3.10 - and it works fine with phpinfo, which I tried as suggested in KB635. (Alternative, I suppose might be to try php5 and your fix for that since I am not using other applications on the machine in question). I'll let you know if I come up with something that works - I've also received another suggestion on the cmsimple forum, which I will try first (my query there is posted in more detail under the Installation list - it is the first posting on that page, if you are interested.

By the way, I assume you must be the same Clem Rutter who has written a very good and interesting article on CMSimple (school web site) - gr8 work!
