Inbound SMTP mail broken..?
Posted by  Joseph Blaty  on Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at 3:53:56 PM (EST)
I have been trying to get LS2004 working now for a couple of days. I think I finally got the SMTP outbound mail working with my ISP, BellSouth (with no authentication). However, now I'm not getting any INCOMING mail to my domain. Here is what I see in the log upon startup:

3:45:17 PM SMTP: Internet addresses read - total of 6 addresses (aliases) for 4 users.
3:45:17 PM SMTP: Initializing Windows Sockets...
3:45:19 PM LAN SUITE Anti-virus initialized.
3:45:19 PM SMTP: Anti-spam blacklist read - total of 1 items.
3:45:19 PM SMTP: Anti-spam whitelist read - total of 185 items.
3:45:19 PM SMTP: Initializing SMTP service...
3:45:19 PM SMTP: [0] Bind error (I/O: No error)
3:45:19 PM SMTP: SMTPListen (4) error.
3:45:19 PM SMTP: Error initializing SMTP port - port already used?
3:45:19 PM POP3: Initializing POP3 service...
3:45:19 PM POP3: [0] Bind error (I/O: No error)
3:45:19 PM POP3: POP3Listen (4) error.
3:45:19 PM POP3: Error initializing POP3 port - port already used?
3:45:19 PM NS: Error 3 when starting DNS proxy.
3:45:22 PM PROXY: 0924 FTP-Client proxy uses 0.0.0.0:21
3:45:22 PM PROXY: 0944 WWW/FTP/security proxy and WWW uses 0.0.0.0:8090
3:45:22 PM PROXY: 0980 SSL WWW server uses 0.0.0.0:443
3:45:22 PM HTTP: WWW/Proxy software started as configured.

I've tried to run through the configuration wizard again, just to "reset" everything.

The POP3 mailboxes are collecting just fine. The problem is occuring when external SMTP relays try to connect directly to my mail server.

Something is using port 25, on your server machine. Do you have IIS installed? If you do, you will have to go into 'Services', and disable the 'SMTP' serivce(This is installed when IIS is installed).

Russell,

IIS is not installed. In fact, Apache is running instead.

Russell,

I've done a little more PD, and I'm thinking this might be a firewall issue. It appears that inbound port 25 traffic is not getting through to this machine. I tried doing a port probe ( www.grc.com ) on port 25, and ShieldsUp says that it's "Stealth". Anyway, I'm doing some more research on it to see if I can get port 25 open.
