|access was denied because the username and/or pass

Just installed LANSuite at a client who only has a 56K dial-up on their Win98SE machines.
If I double-click on the dial-up as normal then it connects fine, but if I try to use this dial-up through LANSuite for auto-POP3 retrival (I'm only using LANSuite as a Mail server nothing else yet) then I get 'access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain'. I've entered the exact same username and password as the dial-up, but it won't connect.
If I use a completely different ISP/dial-up then it works fine.
I know this looks like its the ISP thats at fault, but what is actually the problem?
Can you explain why it is doing this?
