email attachment filter

Is it possible to setup LAN to reject or filter out certain attachments such as those with .exe. This is currently implemented in my workplace and is a useful virus limiter.
Thanks
Peter

You might be confusing a 'feature' of Outlook with a feature of LS.. Microsoft Outlook by default blocks many attachments deemed 'unsafe' including .exe files. Check out this MS page for the list of attachments blocked by Outlook 2k3;

Thanks Jason. Workstations are running Outlook 2000 and blocking attachments at the workstations is an alternative, but I was really trying to be more foolproof by stopping selected attachments from passing through the email gateway.

I know what you mean about server-side blocking. I agree it would be a really nice bonus feature.

However Outlook 2000 also has this function (not just 2k3 as I mentioned) with a similar list of blocked attachments.. (list can be found on technet) and there is no easy way for your end users to circumvent the blocking of Level 1 extensions, so it is fairly foolproof.

Although, personally I have found this 'feature' to be more of a nuisance than a help.. I don't know how many times somebody has not been able to send themselves a file from home or something because of this feature.. and a strong antivirus solution on all stations is good practice anyway!
