When using POP3 it doesn't matter what kind of device it is the problem is present. But on the PC you just let it finish downloading the few hundred messages and sort by date and everything looks fine...

Sounds like there's a setting in your IMAP client that is only downloading headers for larger e-mail message. This isn't a problem at all with Groupware, it's a setting on your phone's imap client.
